A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Creator Explains Prince Baelor's Shocking Fate In Episode 5 Prince Baelor Targaryen moments before his death in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 4 By Jennifer Chu Published Feb 15, 2026, 11:35?PM EST Jennifer is a TV and Movie News Editor at ScreenRant. She started her journey in entertainment media in 2022 when she first joined Valnet at CBR before coming to ScreenRant. Jennifer loves TV, especially science fiction. She also loves late-night talk shows, due to her insomnia. Alien: Earth is definitely one of her favorite shows, and she jumps on any chance she gets to write about it. Even on her days off, she will claim an Alien Earth article if one is available. Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon are two of her favorite late-night hosts, and Conan O'Brien before he left his show. Her Alien: Earth coverage for ScreenRant is by far the work that she is most proud of so far. She was initially a finance and political editor, but her passion for pop culture convinced her to transition into entertainment journalism. During her off time, she loves to binge-watch cooking shows such as Kitchen Nightmares. Jennifer also loves spending time with her daughter and cherishes every moment of it. After the shocking death in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the show's creator finally speaks up. Despite surviving the Trial of the Seven, the beloved prince passed away almost immediately after it was over. He removed his helmet and revealed a head injury that was inflicted upon him by his own brother, Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell), and succumbed to his injuries shortly after. According to Parker, the shocking death in episode 5 was designed to be as shocking and heartbreaking as it appeared onscreen. Prince Baelor in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms He explained that the true horror of the scene comes when the helmet is removed. Revealing that the only thing keeping Baelor alive was his armor made the audience realize that the character was destined to die. And to make the scene even more gut-wrenching, the prince told Dunk, portrayed by Peter Claffey, that he is the knight that the realm truly needed. Speaking to the New York Post, creator Ira Parker explained that the fate of Baelor Targaryen was effectively sealed long before the fatal blow. He stated: Basically, the situation that we have with Baelor is that his life is being held together by the fact that he has his helmet on. He’s already a dead man, he just doesn’t realize it yet. And so, when that helmet comes off and he dies right there, man, it’s the most brutal type of death. Parker said that the death also makes Dunk's life a lot harder. Since Baelor was a compassionate person who admired Dunk. The late prince becoming the king would have greatly benefited him. The creator explained that the tragedy is made worse by how close the protagonist comes to achieving his goals. He described it as a recurring pattern in the character’s life, how success can feel within reach before fate abruptly snatches it away from him. I think that’s probably a running theme for Dunk in his life, and for a lot of people in their life. Things feel so close, then for some reason fate intervenes and shows us a different way. The final episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will air on HBO on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT.
